My family was hit by the dreaded flu this week, especially my 7-year-old son. After a particularly long morning of stomach flu, fever and messy miserableness he said to me, “This has been a really nice morning.” My jaw hit the floor hard because it had been anything but nice! “Why do you say that?” I asked. “Because it’s not about being sick Mom– It’s about love and there’s been a lot of love this morning.” My soul hit the breaks and rolled in reverse. “He’s right” I thought, gently setting down the anti-bacterial spray and Air-borne bottle, it is about love.
I didn’t think about this moment again until I heard Moses today at Mass:
Dt: 6: 3-6
“Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD alone!
Therefore, you shall love the LORD, your God,
with all your heart,
and with all your soul,
and with all your strength.
Take to heart these words which I enjoin on you today.”
That’s right, just as Moses (and my son) said, It’s about love. On a side note, I just can’t hear the name Moses without thinking of this song from one of my favorite movies, Singing in the Rain. Enjoy.
